Like Jonny Hector, one of my all-time chess heroes, I've been dabbling with the Veresov as a backup opening to 1.e4. I played this cracking Veresov blitz game today with 3/0 time control against quite a good opponent. I haven't conferred with Toga II and Stockfish yet, but the moves sure flowed nicely during the game. One thing about the Veresov is that it transposes to an awful lot of mainline Frenches (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3), which suppose I'll now have to learn. :( (more on that later!)

I was inspired to take up the Barry Attack for a while after get slaughtered with it and reading Summerscale's "Killer Repertoire" book, but I could never really get into playing the Zukertort vs 1.d4 d5 as White. So I tried to work out a Veresov / Barry / 150 repertoire -- which seemed to fit well with playing the Nimzovich and 1...Nc6 generally as Black too. I found Gufeld's Chameleon Repertoire book quite helpful, since it shows the range of structures you can get. But, yeah -- the French with Nc3 is not so thrilling for White. Of course, the French is my nemesis generally, and that may have been what turned me off finally. If I could have learned a good anti-Winawer system (maybe Ne2!?) I might have continued.
